Hallowe'en Ornie SAL in 2014

Following on from Lainey's last post where she regretted she could not continue running the SAL into 2014, I volunteered to do so as I have enjoyed it so much this year.  Lainey had done an excellent job running this SAL and the Christmas one too so it seems a nice Thank You to continue her work.

I have asked her to add me as an Admin for the blog so I can add people as contributors and amend the themes etc.  I have not yet heard back as I'm sure she is very busy over Christmas.

If you are all in agreement I will wait until 31st December and then set up a new Hallowe'en SAL Blog which you are all welcome to join!

Please leave a comment here giving your opinions and suggesting any themes you would like to see, including any favourites from this year.

Have a Spooky New Year!

Thank-you !

Thank you so much to each and every one of you who have taken part in the Halloween ornament Sal.  All the ornaments look wonderful.
Due to a number of my close family members being seriously ill this year my stitching has been non-existent and any internet time I've had has been very limited. I hope there will be someone who will continue the SAL in 2014.
Merry Christmas & Best Wishes for 2014!

Jo's Excuse for not stitching an October Ornie!

I have fallen behind the last couple of months for a variety of reasons.  Here is this month's excuse:

He is Drac-in-a-Box from Just Cross Stitch's Hallowe'en Ornie Special 2013.

Designed by Susan Myers of Acorn House Designs.

I stitched him on 32 count Permin Linen in Star Sapphire. This is a very stiff linen so ideal for covering the box panels.  His body and arms were stitched on black evenweave so I did not have to stitch all the black myself!!

He was quite a challenge to make up, partly due to JCS deciding not to publish Susan's helpful diagram which showed how to make up the body.  Once I'd done the little figure, the box itself was quite straightforward.  As with everything, preparation is all important.  Spend the time backstitching round each panel, take time mounting the panels onto card and the whip-stitching is that much more simple.

I'll be posting some more pictures on my own blog but here is one of the back of the piece:

Nothing new for Sept :(

I'm sorry to say, I didn't get a September ornie stitched but I did manage to get a couple of my other ones finished into ornaments:

I'm so pleased I got so many new Halloween ornies because of this SAL.  I'm not sure if I'll get any more stitched before the end of the year but I plan on getting them all turned into ornaments.  Christmas is fast approaching and though I'm not as far behind as last year, I've got a bit of work to do yet.

Happy Halloween everyone!

Tuesday 17 September 2013

This has been a very busy summer and fall is not slowing down.   Did not get August, September ornaments done.   Love seeing all the cute ornaments.

Playing Catch Up

Hello - it's been quite some time since I've posted.  I've been stitching, but my computer is so slow, it takes forever to post.  Here's my ghost for May! From JCS Halloween issue 2012.  This one was fun to make!

Pat's August & September Finishes

Here is my August "Own Choice" finish:

I chose Blackbird Design's All Dressed Up
from their Trix or Treat booklet.
40-count Heritage linen,
threads are mostly the recommended overdyes.

And my September "Halloween Words" finish:

This is again from the BBD Trix or Treat booklet,
same linen, but the thread is Gloriana Charcoal.

My Halloween tree looks fabulous with nine new ornaments!
I think I'll kit up October's Owl today!

Jo's August Finish

I missed July as I was busy stitching my cousin's wedding sampler.  Pop over to my blog if you want to see the most amazing wedding cake ever!

This month I decided to stitch a nice small design to make sure I was able to complete it.

Here is Julia Lucas' Trick or Treat from Just Cross Stitch Hallowe'en Special 2013:

Julia Lucas Trick or Treat photo DSC03915Skeletons_zps3da3384d.jpg

They are nearly all beads and great fun to stitch.  I have decided to make my ornies into little open topped bags and put chocolates in each one on our Hallowe'en tree.  We are having a Hallowe'en tree for the first time this year.  I'll try find something suitable or I might just go into the field and chop a branch off a tree!!

September is Hallowe'en Words.  I wrote down some notes at the beginning of the year so I'll have to check them out and see what I thought of for that one.

Some of my finishes for the year

It doesn't look like I'm going to get a new ornie done this month.  Actually, I haven't even begun it yet and have other projects lined up for the rest of August.   But with Halloween quickly approaching, I have taken some time to ornamentify a few of them.  I hope you enjoy them.

It's cute, but not "me."
I may give this one away.

No ornament for July.  It has been a very busy summer.  Hope to stitch my August ornament, Witch Hat by Erica Michaels 2005.

Change of plans

Originally I was going to stitch Bad Neighborhood for July but I recently won a traveling pattern and decided to stitch it instead.  It's called Quaker Moon by Bent Creek.  I guess it technically would qualify for July's spiders/bats theme (it does have a few small bats on it) but since it has a bigger owl, I decided to stitch October's owl now.  This way I can finish it and get the pattern back on the road.  Then in October, I'll stitch the spiders in Bad Neighborhood.

June Ornament

Here is my June ornament.  Not found of scary things but the ghost reminded me of Casper the Friendly Ghost.  Does anyone remember him?

July will be Bad Neighbor by Tracy Horner from Just Cross Stitch magazine 2012.

June Ornament - Tiki Stitches

Not quite the Witching Hour so there’s still a little time to submit my entry for the month.

The design is by Jenny Barton.  I switched out the black backstitch for some glow in the dark thread. I couldn’t get a picture but it looks pretty good in the dark.

Happy stitching.

Katie's Finished June

I finished my Mummy with a Tomb haha. Do I get extra credit for doing both themes? haha. He was a fun stitch. He's from the 2010 Halloween JCS. I made some changes to make him more mine. I did him on white perforated paper. Love everyone's finishes. Thanks for giving me motivation to stay caught up so far.

Wednesday 19 June 2013

Jo's June Finish

I have literally just finished stitching and had to share immediately, he's so cute!!

There is a series of Spooky Kitties designed by Carand88 on the Deviant Art site, they are inspired by original animations by Hyraea, also on Deviant Art.

There is no mummy though, so I just stitched the basic outline of one of the others, added some horizontal lines in elongated stitches (1 thread high by 2 threads wide) to make the bandages lines, then I used two different shades of cream to fill in and some brown for his face.  He's stitched on 28 count black Jobelan.

I'll be framing him in a four apeture frame with Ghostie Kitty, Witchy Kitty and maybe Zombie Kitty.  I'm planning on putting Mr and Mrs Frankenkitty together and also a double act of the Pumpkin and Candycorn Kitties.

July is Spiders and Bats, there is a lovely Spider's Web design in JCS which is really tempting me so that is top of the list, for now!

Monday 10 June 2013

R.I.P. for June

I started and finished my June ornament over the weekend.  It was a very quick stitch.  I changed the border from cross stitch blocks to smyrna crosses.

My choice for next month is Bad Neighborhood by Ink Circles.

Tuesday 4 June 2013

May Ghost and June Tombstone

Here's my May ghost,
outnumbered 3 to 1 by the jacks!

And my June pick:
From the Prairie Schooler Heads Up leaflet.

Katie's June Pick

I found this cute little guy in the 2010 JCS Halloween Issue. He really fits the theme for this month. I look forward to stitching him. I also look forward to seeing what everyone stitches this month. Good luck!

May Ornament

Here is Spooky Tree from The Trilogy.  I just love the two little ghosts in this piece.

Katie's May Finished

I totally forgot to post what piece I picked to stitch before. I've just been so busy. But at least I finished it. This is from Leisure Arts Nov 98 magazine. It was supposed to have a 2nd spider where the 2013 is but I thought it was too much.

I love watching what everyone has choose to stitch and Congrats on all the too cute picks for each month. Good luck with next month!

Jo's May Finish

I decided to go for the small and cute Ghost this month.  This is by a new-to-me designer, Val's Stuff as featured in the 2012 Hallowe'en Ornie Special of JCS.

Val's Stuff Boo photo DSC03656ValsStuffBoo_zps2a66e7fe.jpg

I stitched it on 32 count twilight blue linen, and used the recommended colours but changed the stars to yellow smyrna stitches and the cat's eyes to green french knots instead of yellow.

I'm going to make this one into a little trick or treat mini bag and give it away on my Hallowe'en Blog Hop this October.  Unless I put it in a safe place and can't find it again...

Here is the backing fabric I chose:

Val's Stuff Boo photo DSC03655ValsStuffBoo_zps7e5c83ce.jpg

I'm struggling to find a good choice for tombs or Mummies but I think I have a plan!  It involves an existing design and a pencil and graph paper.  watch this space!

My little ghost

Small and spooky, and from the looks of it ready to catch some rays.  Can ghosts do that?  My little ghost and I wish you all a happy stitching June full of frightful fun!

Thursday 30 May 2013

My May ornament with fabric for finishing.  I changed the pattern some and threads, fun to stitch.

My Ghost choice for May

Hello Everyone,

This is what I decided to stitch for this months Halloween ornament.

This is an older pattern from San-Man Originals. I will be stitching the one with the ghost and black cat.

Tuesday 14 May 2013

A cool ghost

May's ghost is finished (and isn't he one cool dude?):

I haven't decided on June's project yet.  I have a couple pattern's in mind but that could change as I shop around.

Saturday 11 May 2013

April's Ornament

I finally finished stitching my April ornament.  This is The Stocking from La D Da.  It can be found on the JCS 2012Halloween Collector's Issue.

I am not a big fan of ghosts, so I am going to stitch something else for May.  Just not sure what that will be yet.

Tuesday 7 May 2013

Elaine's May Ornament

Trying this again. If it works I'll delete my other post. Hopefully my pic will load this time. :)

This is the ornament I have chosen to stitch for my May ornament. This will be my first attempt at stitching a Mill Hill ornament so we'll see how it goes. :)
Well, it worked! It took forever though! Guess I just wasn't patient enough last time. :)

Hugs, Elaine

Witch One?

I'm a little late posting for April.  Wow, did that month fly by or is it just me?!  My pick this month is "Witch One" by Nancy Greenberg in the 2012 Halloween issue of Just Cross Stitch magazine.  Stitched on oatmeal Aida with DMC floss.  She's held together with DMC memory floss.

Thursday 2 May 2013

Jo's March Finish, April Non-start and May's Choice

I think that covers everything!

Here is the design I stitched for Haunted House in March scrapbooked on a suitable spooky paper:

La Contesse Haunted Castle photo DSC03617LaContesseCastle_zpsdd91794f.jpg

This is a freebie from La Contesse's blog.  I changed it slightly to make it square and added a little witch charm instead of the charted stitched bats.  It is stitched over 1 on 28count burnt orange Jazlyn.

La Contesse Haunted Castle photo DSC03618LaContesseCastle_zps1c509d01.jpg

I didn't manage to stitch anything for April's Free Choice because I was busy with Easter giveaway prizes so I thought we'd skip a month and dive straight into May's Ghost.

I have a choice of two, one is from JCS Hallowe'en Special 2012, a simple ghost with the word Boo in orange.  The other is a freebie from a new blog called Snowflower Diaries, you may have heard of it?  It will probably come down to time (or lack thereof!)

April Finish - Tiki Stitches

I picked out a design for April and started stitching.  Then I started stitching on a bunch of other things and ran out of April.  Anyway, here’s the end result.

It’s from the JCS 2012 Halloween issue.  The pattern is called Spells by The Stitcherhood.  I’m already thinking about doing this again (someday) and changing the colors.  Right now it’s time to move on to the ghosts for May.

Happy Stitching.
